Things that were cool and pretty cutting edge 10-15 years ago. How things have changed. Some of this stuff still makes for excellent learning material. Maybe it’s an inspiration, or a starting place for your next big idea or project! Clearly, they were big projects for those who created them!
- Appnee Freeware Group
- That’s an interesting website with lots of vintage stuff. I don’t think it’s technically the Dark Web. But you should exercise caution.
Just so you know:
“If you intend to use AppNee’s resources chronically, or are anxious to ask any questions at AppNee, be sure to read the F.A.Q. page first. Otherwise, we can only see you as a very impatient, irresponsible and selfish person. These are the people AppNee hates.”
- eXtplorer
- An explorer-like file browser for your http server. This thing is pretty advanced, has a lot of features like file-permissions viewing, and you can even edit files (e.g. php, html, etc.). It’s advertised as a plugin for Joomla which is a content management system (CMS) like WordPress, or Drupal, although unlike WordPress, Joomla started out with less of an identity crisis. Check out eXtplorer. Download it and stick it in a directory on your HTTP server. No CMS required. Allegedly, it can be used with WordPress as well. I wouldn’t recommend that, as there are already existing plugins for WordPress that accomplish that this does.
- Edit Area
- A Javascript powered textarea editor. Seems to be what powers the editor for eXtplorer? Editors like these were likely overshadowed by the popularity of TinyMCE. I never really experimented with all of that stuff extensively. So, I can’t say from experience if they truly share an exact functionality, or are a means to the same end.
- Xinha
- Xinha is a WYSIWYG sort of textarea editor. Shares some similarities with Edit Area, but more robust. I found an old copy of Xinha on an old Development server hard drive and realized it still works, and is kind of fun to play with it. Later, I found a copy of eXtplorer on that same drive, so hence the inspirations for this post. Xinha is still available on GitHub but it doesn’t seem to be in active development.
- Redmine
- Redmine – a Ruby / Rails sort of project management thing. Not sure how I came across that one. Do you do Ruby, or Rails? Ruby while you’re doing “ridin’ the rails”? Rails while you’re on Ruby? Hmm…
